How Manchester food businesses run, and what that means for an EPOS
Manchester's restaurant scene is a set of distinct districts: the Northern Quarter's independents, Deansgate and Spinningfields for business dining, the curry restaurants along Rusholme's Wilmslow Road, and a student-heavy south of the city. Each district has its own peak hours, so a group with sites in two of them needs reports that separate them rather than blend them.
Match days, concerts and the student calendar swing demand more than the season does. Item-level and daypart reports let you compare an event night with a normal Thursday and set prep and rotas from your own numbers, which matters when margins are thin.
Takeaway and delivery are a large share of trade for many Manchester kitchens, so being able to separate dine-in, collection and delivery on one menu is more useful than a longer feature list.
Which council registers and inspects a Manchester food business
Greater Manchester is ten separate councils, and the city centre sits right on the boundary with Salford. The council for the exact premises registers and inspects you, which is not always the one the postal town suggests.
| Where | Who | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Food business registration | The local council for the premises | Registration is free and must reach the council at least 28 days before you start trading. Separate premises are registered separately, and a change of ownership or address needs re-registration. |
| Across the river and the borders | Salford, Trafford and the other Greater Manchester councils | Salford Quays and MediaCityUK sit in Salford and Old Trafford in Trafford, so a Manchester postcode does not always mean Manchester City Council. |
| Hygiene rating | Food Standards Agency (Food Hygiene Rating Scheme) | Inspections produce a rating from 0 to 5, published by the FSA. Displaying it is voluntary in England and compulsory in Wales and Northern Ireland. |
| Alcohol and late-night entertainment | The council's licensing team, under the Licensing Act 2003 | A premises licence is a separate application from food registration. |
| VAT | HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) | Register for VAT once your taxable turnover reaches the registration threshold; invoices show your VAT number. |
Check which council covers the exact postcode before applying, because registration and licensing follow the premises and not the postal town.
Food business registration, hygiene inspection and any premises licence are handled by the local council, so confirm which council covers the exact postcode. We do not quote fees because they change.

Match days, concerts and the student calendar
A Manchester venue can have a Saturday that is three times a normal one and a Sunday that is empty, depending on a fixture list or a concert. Reading those peaks against item sales shows which dishes carry an event night and which do not, so prep and rotas can follow the diary.
Student trade has its own calendar, with a loud September and a quiet summer. Comparing month by month against last year, per site, is the way to tell a weak month from a normal dip.

Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit
TasteIQ does not process card payments or integrate with payment terminals yet. You keep your existing terminal and acquirer and record the payment mode on each bill. If integrated card payments are essential, confirm that workflow in the free trial before you decide.
Orders from Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat and similar apps are entered under the delivery or other order type rather than imported automatically. If automatic import is essential, ask us for the current status and test the exact workflow in the free trial first.
Support hours follow India time, which is early morning to early afternoon in the UK. Setup is remote and the app is self-serve.
TasteIQ's hardware partner network supplies hardware in India; elsewhere, plan to use devices and printers you already have or buy locally.
