How Los Angeles food businesses run, and what that means for a POS
Los Angeles is a city of neighbourhoods rather than a single downtown, so a restaurant group often has outlets in Silver Lake, Koreatown, Santa Monica and the Valley that serve very different crowds. One shared menu with outlet-level reports matters more here than a single till, because what sells in one neighbourhood is a poor guide to another.
Cloud kitchens, commissaries and food-truck operations share the city with sit-down restaurants, and many operators run both a truck and a fixed location. Billing, stock and reports that work for a counter, a delivery-only kitchen and a dine-in room from one menu keep that mix manageable.
Health grades are posted where customers can see them, so cleanliness is a visible part of the brand. Clear daily item and stock records support the ordering and rotation habits behind a good grade.
Who registers, permits and taxes a Los Angeles restaurant
A Los Angeles restaurant works with the state for its seller's permit, the city for its business tax registration, and the county for the health permit and grade, and the order matters.
| Where | Who | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sales tax registration | California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) | Most restaurants register for a seller's permit, which is free, and each location is registered. The city asks for the number when you register your business. |
| City business tax registration | City of Los Angeles Office of Finance | Issues the Business Tax Registration Certificate. It is a tax registration, not a health or operating permit. |
| Health permit, inspections and grade card | Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Environmental Health | Grades retail food facilities and requires the card to be clearly visible to customers. A facility scoring under 70% posts only the score card. |
Some cities inside the county, such as Pasadena and Long Beach, run their own health departments, so confirm which agency covers your address before you apply.
Permits follow the premises and the activity, and city, county and state each have a part, so confirm with the issuing office before you sign a lease. Sales-tax rates are set by state, county and city and change; we do not quote them here. Serving alcohol needs a separate state licence.

The order to register in, and why
A sensible sequence is to obtain your federal employer identification number, register with CDTFA for the seller's permit, register with the City of Los Angeles for the business tax certificate, and then apply for the county health permit and schedule the inspection. The city's registration asks for the seller's permit number, so doing the state step first avoids a loop.
A business tax certificate does not authorise you to operate on its own. Other city departments commonly ask to see it before issuing health, safety or zoning permits, so treat it as the key that unlocks the rest rather than the finish line.

Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit
TasteIQ does not process card payments or integrate with payment terminals yet. You keep your existing processor and terminal and record the payment mode on each bill, which also means no processor lock-in and no processing markup. If you need tips adjusted on the terminal and settled to the bill automatically, confirm that workflow in the free trial before you decide.
Orders from DoorDash, Uber Eats and similar apps are entered under the delivery or other order type rather than imported automatically. If automatic import is essential, ask us for the current status and test the exact workflow in the free trial first.
Support hours follow India time, which falls overnight to early morning across US time zones. Setup is remote and the app is self-serve, but if you need live help during evening service, ask us what is possible before you sign up.
TasteIQ's hardware partner network supplies hardware in India; elsewhere, plan to use devices and printers you already have or buy locally.
