How Chicago food businesses run, and what that means for a POS
Chicago eats across a spread of neighbourhood formats: corner counters for Italian beef and hot dogs, taverns and neighbourhood bars with a kitchen, and larger restaurant rooms in the Loop, West Loop and River North. A single POS has to work as a fast counter for one and as a table service system for another, and keep the menu consistent for groups that run both.
The weather is a real input. Winter evenings and summer festival weekends move covers far more than most cities, and patio season changes how many tables you can run. Item-level and daypart reports let you compare those swings year over year and buy stock for the season you are actually in.
Taxes here layer up: state, county and a city restaurant tax, so what prints on the bill matters. Keep tax-inclusive versus tax-exclusive menu pricing consistent from menu to receipt so a diner's total matches what staff quoted.
Who licenses, inspects and taxes a Chicago restaurant
A Chicago restaurant is licensed by the city's business affairs department, inspected by the public health department, and taxed by both the city and the state.
| Where | Who | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Retail Food Establishment licence | Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) | A licence is needed wherever perishable food is served or sold from a fixed location, at a properly zoned non-residential site. It runs for two years, and the Department of Buildings inspects restaurants with seating before renewal. |
| Health inspection and food manager certificate | Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), Food Protection | Inspects before licensing. A City of Chicago Food Service Sanitation Certificate must be held by the person in charge and posted where customers and inspectors can see it, where food is prepared on site. |
| State sales and use tax | Illinois Department of Revenue | Businesses making taxable sales register with the state for a retailers' occupation tax account. |
Chicago also levies a restaurant tax on food and beverage sales, administered by the city's Department of Revenue, and restaurants are registered for it automatically. Check the city's current rate, and any city debt must be cleared before a licence is issued.
Permits follow the premises and the activity, and city, county and state each have a part, so confirm with the issuing office before you sign a lease. Sales-tax rates are set by state, county and city and change; we do not quote them here. Serving alcohol needs a separate state licence.

City certificate versus state certificate
Chicago asks for its own Food Service Sanitation Certificate, separate from the food protection manager certification the State of Illinois expects. Plan for both, and for both to be current on the day of inspection, rather than assuming one covers the other.
The city has run expedited licensing pilots that let some restaurants open before the pre-licence health inspection, with a consultation and a later inspection instead. One such pilot was scheduled to end in December 2023, so confirm with BACP whether any programme is currently available before planning an opening around it.

Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit
TasteIQ does not process card payments or integrate with payment terminals yet. You keep your existing processor and terminal and record the payment mode on each bill, which also means no processor lock-in and no processing markup. If you need tips adjusted on the terminal and settled to the bill automatically, confirm that workflow in the free trial before you decide.
Orders from DoorDash, Uber Eats and similar apps are entered under the delivery or other order type rather than imported automatically. If automatic import is essential, ask us for the current status and test the exact workflow in the free trial first.
Support hours follow India time, which falls overnight to early morning across US time zones. Setup is remote and the app is self-serve, but if you need live help during evening service, ask us what is possible before you sign up.
TasteIQ's hardware partner network supplies hardware in India; elsewhere, plan to use devices and printers you already have or buy locally.
