How Dubai food businesses run, and what that means for a POS

Dubai packs mall food courts, hotel restaurants, specialty cafés and a large delivery-kitchen layer into one dense market. Operators typically price in AED, add 5% VAT, and many also add a service charge, so how tax and charges print on the bill matters as much as speed at the counter.

Many Dubai F&B operators run more than one outlet or brand across the city, so a shared menu and a dashboard that reports each outlet separately matter sooner than they do for a single-site restaurant. TasteIQ's multi-outlet dashboard syncs the menu and reports outlet by outlet.

Because setup is remote and the trial lasts 14 days, a Dubai outlet can test on real shifts, including a busy lunch and a weekend, before paying anything.

Which authorities license a Dubai outlet

A Dubai food business deals with a commercial licensing authority and a food-safety authority in parallel, and some concepts are licensed in a free zone instead. The site and the activity decide which applies.

WhereWhoWhat to know
Commercial licenceDubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET, formerly DED)Issues the trade licence with a food-and-beverage activity that matches your concept.
Food safety and kitchen layoutDubai Municipality, Food Safety DepartmentChecks kitchen layouts before fit-out and inspects the finished site; food establishments also maintain a Foodwatch registration.
Fire and life safetyDubai Civil DefenceIssues the fire-safety clearance that most standalone cafés and restaurants need.
Free zonesThe free zone's own authority (for example Meydan, IFZA or Dubai CommerCity)Some concepts are licensed in a free zone, where that zone's rules and approvals apply.
Abu DhabiAbu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA)Abu Dhabi has its own food-safety regulator and licensing departments; Dubai approvals do not carry over.
VATUAE VAT at 5%, Federal Tax AuthorityRegister with the FTA once your taxable supplies reach the registration threshold; tax invoices carry your TRN.

Get the current requirements and fee quotes from DET and Dubai Municipality before you sign a lease, because layout problems found after fit-out are expensive to fix.

Licensing follows the premises and the activity, and free zones have their own authorities, so confirm with the issuing body for your site before you commit to a lease. Civil defence and, if you serve alcohol, a separate permit are also required where they apply. We do not quote fees or thresholds here because they change.

VAT, service charge and invoices in Dubai

UAE restaurants charge 5% VAT on food and drink, and a VAT-registered outlet shows its tax registration number (TRN) on tax invoices. Consumer sales commonly use shorter simplified tax invoices.

In TasteIQ you set the tax percentage and whether menu prices include tax, add a service-charge percentage per outlet, and set the outlet's billing currency, for example AED. During the trial, print a bill and check that every field your accountant needs, including your TRN, appears the way you want it.

UAE e-invoicing: what it means for a restaurant

The UAE is introducing Peppol-based e-invoicing, starting with business-to-business and business-to-government transactions. Consumer sales are excluded for now, so walk-in diners are outside the first phases, but corporate accounts and catering invoices are not. Timelines in the sources we checked varied, with a pilot from 1 July 2026 and mandatory dates in 2027 depending on business size.

We have not published a TasteIQ integration with accredited e-invoicing providers. If you issue business invoices at volume, ask us for the current status and plan to use an accredited service provider alongside your POS.

How setup works

  1. Start the free trial. Create your outlet in the app. No card, no setup fee.
  2. Add your menu. Upload photos of your menu or type items in. AI reads items and prices; you confirm them.
  3. Connect printers and test. Pair the receipt and kitchen printers you already have and print a test bill and KOT.
  4. Go live. Train staff on real orders during the trial. Most outlets are billing in about 15 minutes.

Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit

We have not published a UAE e-invoicing (Peppol) integration. If you issue business invoices at volume, ask us for the current status and plan to use an accredited service provider alongside your POS.

Orders from Talabat, Deliveroo and similar apps are entered under the delivery or other order type rather than imported automatically. If automatic import is essential, ask us for the current status and test the exact workflow in the free trial first.

Card payments are taken on your own terminal or payment provider, and onboarding is remote, over phone and WhatsApp, on devices you already own. TasteIQ's hardware partner network supplies hardware in India; elsewhere, plan to use devices and printers you already have or buy locally.
