How Kochi food businesses run, and what that means for a POS
Kochi's eating-out trade splits into a few distinct rhythms: heritage-area cafés in Fort Kochi serving a tourist season that peaks through the cooler months, mall food courts and restaurants around Edappally and MG Road, and weekday lunch queues for the IT workforce at Kakkanad.
Many Kochi kitchens employ cooks and helpers from other states, so a ticket written only in English or only in Malayalam does not always suit the person cooking. Printing in the language the kitchen reads is a practical fix rather than a feature checkbox.
TasteIQ lets you set the KOT language per outlet, so a Fort Kochi café, an Edappally restaurant and a Kakkanad counter can each print what their own staff reads.
Which authority covers your Kochi outlet
Kochi Corporation covers the city proper, but the urban area around it is made up of separate municipalities. Licences follow the local body that covers the premises.
| Where | Who | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Kochi city | Kochi Municipal Corporation (Corporation of Cochin) | The local body for premises inside the corporation limits. |
| Thrikkakara, Kalamassery and Tripunithura | Each is a separate municipality | A Kochi Corporation licence does not cover these; apply to the municipality whose ward your premises are in. |
| Application portal | K-SMART (Kerala local-body services portal) | Sources describe K-SMART as the route for the enterprise (trade) licence in urban local bodies; confirm the current process with your local body. |
| Labour registration | Kerala Labour Department | Registration for working hours and staff conditions. See the note below the table. |
| Food safety | FSSAI (FoSCoS portal) | Registration or licence depends on turnover and activity. TasteIQ also offers FSSAI filing assistance. |
| GST | Kerala, state code 32 | Register on the GST portal; every invoice carries your GSTIN. |
Kerala's local-body portal and naming have changed in recent years, and some guides still describe the older trade-licence process. Check the local body's own notice for the current form.
Jurisdiction follows the premises address, not the locality name, so confirm which body covers your plot before applying. Fire safety clearance and, if you serve alcohol, state excise approval are separate and depend on your building and what you sell. We do not quote fees or thresholds here because they change by notification.
State Shops & Establishments rules are being aligned with the national Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, which took effect on 21 November 2025, and states are handling the transition differently. Confirm which registration applies to your outlet.

KOT in Malayalam
Most Kochi kitchens work in Malayalam, with Hindi and Tamil common among kitchen staff. TasteIQ prints kitchen order tickets in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and nine other languages, chosen per outlet.
Headings, order types and common dish terms are translated. A dish name outside the built-in vocabulary prints exactly as you typed it, so write item names in the script your kitchen reads. The language is set per outlet in KOT settings.
Hardware on demand, if you want it
TasteIQ runs on the phones, tablets, PCs and printers you already own, so hardware is optional. If you would rather not source it yourself, TasteIQ can arrange billing hardware such as receipt and kitchen printers on demand in India through its partner network.

Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit
If most of your orders arrive through Swiggy or Zomato and you depend on automatic order import, test that exact workflow in the free trial before you decide. TasteIQ records aggregator orders as their own order type so reports separate them from dine-in and takeaway.
TasteIQ is software-first and onboards remotely, over phone and WhatsApp. In India, billing hardware can be arranged on demand through its partner network. If you need one vendor to supply hardware and fit it on site as a single contract, ask what is available in your city before you decide.
