How Mumbai food businesses run, and what that means for a POS
Mumbai outlets pay for space by the square foot, so the city runs on small counters, kiosks near stations and delivery-first kitchens rather than large floors. A POS for that kind of outlet has to fit on one phone or tablet at the counter, close a bill in seconds at the lunch and dinner rushes, and not need a second machine in the back.
The city also has its own meal-box economy: recurring lunch and dinner subscriptions delivered to offices and homes. If that is your business, TasteIQ has a dedicated page for tiffin and meal-subscription services; otherwise the standard billing setup below applies.
Heavy monsoon days hit connectivity and delivery times together. Whatever POS you pick, test it on your outlet's real network during the free trial, including a busy hour, before you commit to a year.
Which authority covers your Mumbai outlet
Greater Mumbai is administered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC, also written MCGM). The wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region is split across several other corporations, so an address in Thane or Navi Mumbai follows a different civic body.
| Where | Who | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai island city and suburbs | Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC / MCGM) | Issues trade licences and the eating-house health licence. Fire safety clearance is separate and comes from the Mumbai Fire Brigade. |
| Navi Mumbai | Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) | Its own licensing office and portal; a BMC licence does not cover premises here. |
| Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar | Each is a separate municipal corporation | Apply to the corporation that covers your address, not to BMC. |
| Labour registration | Maharashtra Labour Department | Reported in 2026: Maharashtra said a separate Shops & Establishments registration is not needed once you are registered under the OSH Code, while the Act's other provisions still apply. Confirm with the department. |
| Food safety | FSSAI (FoSCoS portal) | Registration or licence depends on turnover and activity. TasteIQ also offers FSSAI filing assistance. |
| GST | Maharashtra, state code 27 | Register on the GST portal; every invoice carries your GSTIN. |
Some Mumbai premises also need a police licensing approval. Guides disagree on whether a police eating-house licence applies to a given outlet, so ask the licensing branch rather than assume.
Jurisdiction follows the premises address, not the locality name, so confirm which body covers your plot before applying. Fire safety clearance and, if you serve alcohol, state excise approval are separate and depend on your building and what you sell. We do not quote fees or thresholds here because they change by notification.
State Shops & Establishments rules are being aligned with the national Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, which took effect on 21 November 2025, and states are handling the transition differently. Confirm which registration applies to your outlet.

KOT in Marathi, Hindi or Gujarati
Mumbai kitchens are staffed from across Maharashtra and North India, so one language on the ticket rarely fits everyone. TasteIQ prints kitchen order tickets in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and nine other languages, chosen per outlet.
Headings, order types and common dish terms are translated. A dish name outside the built-in vocabulary prints exactly as you typed it, so write item names in the script your kitchen reads. The language is set per outlet in KOT settings.
Where to buy receipt and kitchen printers in Mumbai
TasteIQ works with standard receipt and kitchen printers, so you can buy locally. Lamington Road in South Mumbai is the city's best-known computer and electronics market and the common starting point for printers and accessories.
- Lamington Road. Computer and electronics wholesale and retail; many dealers on one stretch.
Ask for a GST invoice and a warranty card, and print a sample bill and a sample KOT before you pay.
Hardware on demand, if you want it
TasteIQ runs on the phones, tablets, PCs and printers you already own, so hardware is optional. If you would rather not source it yourself, TasteIQ can arrange billing hardware such as receipt and kitchen printers on demand in India through its partner network.
Tell us your city and what you need on WhatsApp and we will say what is available.

Pick the setup that matches your Mumbai outlet
Cloud kitchens
Delivery-first kitchens that sit in a shared kitchen or a back lane can record Swiggy and Zomato orders as separate order types.
Cafés and bakeries
Counter-led cafés need a short menu, fast billing and modifiers for custom orders.
Tiffin and meal subscriptions
Recurring lunch and dinner plans with pause and resume, own or third-party delivery, and GST billing.
What you get for ₹8,990/yr + GST per outlet
One plan, the same in every city: ₹8,990 + GST per outlet per year, after a 14-day free trial, no card. There is no setup fee and no AMC, and no hardware you are required to buy. It runs on Android and iOS phones and tablets, plus Windows and Mac, with standard receipt and kitchen printers.
- GST-ready invoices with configurable tax rates
- Kitchen order tickets (KOT) by station
- Split bills, modifiers, discounts and table transfers
- Inventory deduction with low-stock alerts
- Daily sales, item and payment-mode reports
- Multi-outlet dashboard with menu sync
- Branded online ordering
- AI menu setup from photos
How setup works
- Start the free trial. Create your outlet in the app. No card, no setup fee.
- Add your menu. Upload photos of your menu or type items in. AI reads items and prices; you confirm them.
- Connect printers and test. Pair the receipt and kitchen printers you already have and print a test bill and KOT.
- Go live. Train staff on real orders during the trial. Most outlets are billing in about 15 minutes.
Where TasteIQ may not be the right fit
If most of your orders arrive through Swiggy or Zomato and you depend on automatic order import, test that exact workflow in the free trial before you decide. TasteIQ records aggregator orders as their own order type so reports separate them from dine-in and takeaway.
TasteIQ is software-first and onboards remotely, over phone and WhatsApp. In India, billing hardware can be arranged on demand through its partner network. If you need one vendor to supply hardware and fit it on site as a single contract, ask what is available in your city before you decide.
Restaurant POS in Mumbai: common questions
Yes. Mumbai outlets use the same cloud product as everywhere else and are onboarded remotely, so a small counter or kiosk can run from one phone or tablet plus the printer it already has. Support runs Monday–Saturday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM IST.
